Inventory management

Multi-warehouse inventory platform for an industrial distributor

One stock ledger across warehouses, storefront and ERP — with scanner-driven receiving and picking, and replenishment suggestions a buyer approves.

Illustrative scenario. Fictional industrial supply distributor with three warehouses. A fictional composite of the kind of work we do — not a real client engagement. Results marked [METRIC TO CONFIRM] are placeholders.

Client problem

Stock figures in the ERP, the warehouses and the online store disagreed daily, so sales staff phoned the warehouse before promising a delivery date.

Existing environment

  • ERP used for purchasing and accounting
  • Paper receiving and pick lists
  • Nightly stock feed to the storefront
  • Min/max levels in spreadsheets

Challenge

Make stock accurate in real time across sites and channels without replacing the ERP or stopping the warehouses.

Solution

An inventory service that records every movement in a ledger, offline-capable scanner apps for receiving, putaway, picking and cycle counts, reservations at order time, availability pushed to the storefront as it changes, and forecast-based reorder and transfer suggestions routed to buyers for approval. The ERP stays the financial system of record, fed with receipts, shipments and costing.

Architecture

  1. 01Stock ledger service (PostgreSQL)
  2. 02Event queue for movements and availability
  3. 03React Native scanner app with offline sync
  4. 04ERP, storefront and carrier adapters
  5. 05Forecasting job + buyer approval queue
  6. 06Audit log and role-based access

Technology

  • Next.js
  • TypeScript
  • React Native
  • Node.js
  • Python
  • PostgreSQL
  • Redis
  • AWS

AI integration

Weekly demand forecasts per SKU and location drive reorder and transfer suggestions. Buyers see how each quantity was calculated and approve, edit or reject it; nothing is ordered automatically.

Workflow

  1. Map stock movements and systems
  2. Stand up the ledger beside the ERP
  3. Scanner receiving at one warehouse
  4. Picking, counts and remaining sites
  5. Channel availability sync
  6. Forecasting and approvals

Result

  • [METRIC TO CONFIRM] inventory accuracy after cycle counting
  • [METRIC TO CONFIRM] reduction in stock-outs
  • One stock figure shared by sales, warehouse and finance

Technical highlights

  • No ERP replacement
  • Warehouses rolled out one at a time
  • Every adjustment carries a reason and an approver
